Who we are and what we do
Taking audiences to unexpected places.
Unexpected Places create original, imaginative performances which take our audiences to unexpected places. Creating work since 2015 we have established a reputation for producing thought provoking, endearing, visual productions which bring people together. Based in Southampton, we love to tell a good story, we love to surprise our audiences and we love to leave you pondering our memorable productions for years to come.
We work alongside our education strand ‘Light UP’ to produce accompanying workshops, resources packs and opportunities for our students to be involved in the creative process of Unexpected Places - paving the way for the next generation of theatre makers.
Learning to shine on and off stage.
Light UP boosts young people's confidence through welcoming, five-star, value for money, drama classes and workshops. We want all young people to have regular access to the self-esteem boosting, curiosity encouraging, buzz of achievement feeling, benefits that drama can provide.
Light UP is the education strand of Unexpected Places and teaches over 500 young people a week, with classes across the South of England and in North Worcestershire too.
Introducing the team
Rosanna trained as an actress and director on Rose Brufords’ European Theatre Arts course, specialising in devising theatre.
She also trained in puppetry making and manipulation at D.A.M.U. in Prague, before working in arts administration and marketing for organisations such as the Barbican Centre and The Spark Arts for Children.
Rosanna has directed all of Unexpected Places performances alongside running a performing arts education company Light UP. Light UP is a not for profit organisation that supports young people to shine on and off the stage.
Unexpected Places are lucky to work with a number of freelance actors, directors and creatives. Most recently we have been working with:

Becky works as an actor and director for various companies across Hampshire.

Power. strength. confidence.
We started Steppin' UP in 2019 to address a need for young people to feel body confident and encourage their creativity through dance.
Steppin' UP shapes empowered, body-confident people through Hip Hop dance in a non-judgemental, positive environment.
We help young people express themselves and find self-acceptance through Hip Hop and Commercial dance classes. Our supportive, encouraging classes teach children, teenagers and adults to dance, of course, but more importantly to feel positive, proud and powerful.
UP Studios is the newest part of what we do and who we are. UP Studios is a creative learning centre in Hamble, Southampton. It's our home and there is always something going on! We are working to fill it to the brim with workshops, events and classes abundant - supporting children, teenagers and adults to get creative, get involved and be entertained.
